Redact a PDF so the text is really gone

A black box drawn over text isn't redaction if the words are still underneath. ScanMyPdf removes the content under every redaction in the copy you save, and does it on your device.

How it works

Three steps

Step 1

Mark what to remove

Drag a box over any area, select text and tap Redact, or search for a name or number and redact every match in one tap.

Step 2

Choose the color

Black is standard, but you can pick gray, white or any color, for example to match a court's or client's style.

Step 3

Save the redacted copy

ScanMyPdf rebuilds each page without the content under your boxes. The rest of the text stays searchable; your original stays untouched.

Why covering isn't enough

Many tools simply draw a rectangle on top of the page. Anyone can copy the text underneath or remove the rectangle. ScanMyPdf re-creates every page as a clean image and rebuilds the searchable text layer without the redacted words, so they cannot be selected, searched or copied.

Redact every occurrence at once

Search for a client's name, an account number or a social security number and use Redact all matches. Every occurrence on every page is boxed out, and you can review each one in the Notes panel before saving.

Private by design

Sensitive documents are exactly the ones you shouldn't upload to an online redaction service. Everything here happens inside the app, even offline.

Questions

Good to know

Is the redaction permanent?

Yes, in the saved copy. The content under each box is removed from both the page image and the text layer.

Can I redact scanned documents?

Yes. Draw boxes over any part of a scan. If the scan has OCR text, that text is removed too.

Can I undo a redaction?

Before saving, yes: use Undo or delete it from the Notes panel. Your original file is never changed.
